This is Leonard McCoy, Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Enterprise. Bridge, do you copy?

[ There’s a man in science blue standing next to the fountain, looking cold and grumpy as he shakes his device. ]

Damn interference… Enterprise, this is McCoy. I don’t know what the hell happened with those infernal transporters, but I’m damn sure I ain’t where I’m supposed to be. Scott, can you hear me? Jim? Uhura? Sulu? Chekov? Chapel? Anyone?

… Spock?

[ Nothing, not even the hobgoblin. Dammit. ]

Right, well. Looks like I’ll try and blend in. Christmas music and all...

[ Except since his communicator couldn’t reach the Enterprise, it broadcasted his conversation to the entire city instead… ]

How's your confidence in making diagnoses when the most advanced scanner we run is an MRI?

Believe it or not, I'm trying to help with the inevitable culture shock. If I was in the 23rd century, I'd be out of my depth in the OR, too.

Doctor McCoy, was it?

[ There's a heavy sigh. Yeah, he knows. He just doesn't want to admit it, so he'll talk about the 23rd century instead. ] It wouldn't just be the technology. There's species differences. I've heard about vampires and werewolves, but that doesn't tell you what to do when you've got a patient whose heart is where a kidney would be on a human.

Yeah, that's it.

My first patient back of the job here had impenetrable skin. That was fun.

[No, he actually sounds as if it was.]

Doctor Chase. Surgery and ICU.

How'd you deal with that?

[ And he sounds interested. Ah, doctors. ]

I've got a little bit of everything. Surgery, pathology, psychology... Part of being CMO.

Go down the throat and work from the inside.

[There's a pause, the audio equivalent of a nod.]

I meant that's what I'm head of. I've worked in other fields. But you can hand in a resume when you've settled in. Right now you're probably going to want somewhere with a roof.

[ Or up the other end, if it's closer to there. Sounds like that wasn't the case, though. ]

How large is the hospital? [ He loves his work. It's who he is. ] I've headed inside a coffee shop, for now.

Large enough to service the entire city on days when the curse system thinks it's funny to give half of it the plague. Most of the time it's at low capacity. People don't die here, which takes some of the emergency out of emergency medicine.

[Just dropping that fact in early on.]

I would have suggested a bar, but that's a decent second choice.

Not exactly like death would be back home, at least. Someone sent me a guide.

[ Doesn't mean he isn't going to try his damndest to save them. ]

A bar sounds better, actually.

Not exactly in that they get up and keep breathing. It's still not the preferable outcome.

[Of course not, but Chase spent almost three years commenting on the impossibility of the city. After a trip home in which his real life spiralled out of control he's almost too beaten down to care that this place is crazy.]

[Something he finds preferable when drinking, and these days he drinks hard.]

[ He's reminded of himself for a moment, of southern bars and his ex-wife, and he has to take a moment before he replies. ]

Not like I know anyone here to begin with. How's the bourbon there?

We just had Thanksgiving. Wild Turkey's in season.

Doesn't sound half bad.

[ There's a pause, and then he actually chuckles. ]

I've got my medkit. Hyposprays, a few vaccines and pain killers, dermal regenerator, tricorder...

[Not a fanboy.... not a fanboy.... oh, give it up.]

Give me a guided tour of it and I'll pick up the bar tab.

[ He's changed his mind. You're not half bad. ]
