This is Leonard McCoy, Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Enterprise. Bridge, do you copy?

[ There’s a man in science blue standing next to the fountain, looking cold and grumpy as he shakes his device. ]

Damn interference… Enterprise, this is McCoy. I don’t know what the hell happened with those infernal transporters, but I’m damn sure I ain’t where I’m supposed to be. Scott, can you hear me? Jim? Uhura? Sulu? Chekov? Chapel? Anyone?

Spock?

[ Nothing, not even the hobgoblin. Dammit. ]

Right, well. Looks like I’ll try and blend in. Christmas music and all...

[ Except since his communicator couldn’t reach the Enterprise, it broadcasted his conversation to the entire city instead… ]

This is one of those convention things, right? I know you Star Trek people get a little too into that show at times.

[ enough trekkies had come in and out of the crashdown during crash festivals for her to get that much. she liked star trek, but the fandom for it wasn't something she was really into. liz was too much of a realist in that aspect to spend her time staring up at the stars - even after she met someone actually from the stars. ]

[ wow. he really was into this, wasn't he? no wonder jonathan frakes wanted a constant escort and assistant when he was in roswell for the crash. some of these fans must get pretty intense. it seemed to stress max out at the time, but she really couldn't blame the actor. ]

Uh, nevermind. Has anyone explained The City to you yet?

[ tried? hmm. well, since he is obviously big into star trek... ]

How familiar are you with theoretical physics?

Okay. This is like a pocket dimension. It's a side world that exists parallel to a bunch of different worlds. Like, Earth Version A and Earth Version B run side by side. You've also got this other world where Earth isn't even in the picture also running parallel. And then you've got this place, which exists outside of all of that.

I believe we're pulled here intentionally by specific means of selection, but that's just my theory. Either way, the deities no doubt have the technological know-how to enter other dimensions and times and just pull people from where they were, then drop them here.

[ belatedly, she remembers that she didn't offer her name. ]

Oh! Sorry. I got a little carried away there with-- I'm Liz. Hi.

Something like that. I sort of see us as some intergalactic, multidimensional zoo.

[ most don't. as fascinating as liz finds it all on a scientific level, it's a situation she wishes she weren't in. ]

Yeah, heard that in the initial transmission.

Yeah, I, uh, really like science. It's kind of my passion.

I hope to study it in college.

[ guess who is also only seventeen. :3 ]

I did?

[ a star trek character or some kid who didn't go to conventions and cosplay, that's the question. ]

[ chekov. wow. she's actually kind of flattered, despite still believing that this guy is some star trek fan who's way too into this show for his own good. ]

I can't imagine holding a degree in the field at this age. I mean, there's just so much more out there to learn and I know a lot, but I wouldn't consider myself an expert. I want to be, someday, but seventeen's too young to be an expert on anything. Don't you think?
